Homework Aims

At St Thomas More Catholic School we believe homework is a critical part of delivering the curriculum and needs to be treated as such. It is not an optional extra, it is an intrinsic part of the work we do to support pupils to make outstanding progress.   When used effectively, homework can aid pupils’ understanding of a subject, allow pupils to explore certain aspects of the subject in a bit more depth, and develop students’ research skills.

We therefore believe that the aim of homework is to:

  • Reinforce, revisit or extend the learning that has taken place in the lesson
  • Encourage pupils to develop good study habits
  • Allow pupils the opportunity for further study of the subject
  • Promote a curiosity amongst pupils linked to the particular subject

All pupils are expected to record homework tasks in their planner.  Staff are asked to ensure sufficient time is given to do this and to be mindful of strategies to demonstrate the setting of an extended task.  The average time for a homework task is broken down as follows:

  • Key Stage 3 – 30 minutes
  • Key Stage 4 – 45 minutes
  • Key Stage 5 – 60 minutes
