The transition to Secondary school can be an exciting, and sometimes daunting experience for pupils and indeed parents. At St Thomas More, we work very closely with our feeder primary schools to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. We have a range of transition activities during Year 5 and Year 6 to help pupils become more familiar with life at St Thomas More and interact with their peers.
The academic transition of pupils is of great importance to us. Curriculum leaders and teaching staff at St Thomas More work very closely with staff in our primaries to develop a good understanding of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and the abilities of our children. We gather a wide range of information from Year 6 teachers to ensure that the academic transition is as seamless as possible.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic we were unable to run many of our usual transition events in the 2020-21 year. We therefore took part in the Department for Education Summer School programme. Details can be found here.
The below virtual tour provides a unique opportunity to see our school in action, and get a taste of what we can offer our students.
Before the end of the summer term, Year 6 students are invited to come into St Thomas More to experience a working school day. They have the opportunity to make their own way into school, take part in taster lessons, have a school dinner and learn how the school operates. This offers them a chance to feel comfortable in the senior school environment. We will write to all Year 6 students due to join us, in the Spring / Summer Term to provide further details regarding this event.
Year 6 students are also issued with a Reading Challenge to complete over the Summer Holidays. This can be found here.
