KS2-3 Transition at St Thomas More Catholic School
The transition to Secondary school can be an exciting, and sometimes daunting experience for pupils and indeed parents. At St Thomas More, we work very closely with our feeder primary schools to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. We have a range of transition activities during Year 5 and Year 6 to help pupils become more familiar with life at St Thomas More and interact with their peers.
The academic transition of pupils is of great importance to us. Curriculum leaders and teaching staff at St Thomas More work very closely with staff in our primaries to develop a good understanding of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and the abilities of our children. We gather a wide range of information from Year 6 teachers, including their KS2 Teacher Assessments, and examples of their work to ensure that the academic transition is as seamless as possible.
Pupils who are due to start at St Thomas More in Year 7 are invited to a transition day, where they are given the chance to meet other students who will attend the school in a fun relaxed environment. Pupils spend this day getting to know a bit more about St Thomas More School. This event is currently held at Gibside Estate.
Taster Induction Day
Before the end of the summer term, year 6 students are invited to come into St Thomas More to experience a working school day. They have the opportunity to make their own way into school, take part in taster lessons, have a school dinner and learn how the school operates. This offers them a chance to feel comfortable in the senior school environment.
Year 6 students are also issued with a Reading Challenge to complete over the Summer Holidays. This can be found here.
