Preparing For External Examinations

Preparing for External Examinations

Students at St Thomas More are fully supported by their teachers when preparing for any assessment or examination. One of the key tools we use across the school is the Knowledge Organiser. These documents provide a clear overview of the crucial learning for each subject, organised by module. They act as an essential reference point for revision, helping students to consolidate their understanding and retain key knowledge over time.

As part of our wider curriculum, students also take part in specific lessons on revision skills, wellbeing support during exam periods, and strategies for effective independent study. This holistic approach ensures that students not only know how to revise effectively but also feel emotionally supported throughout the process.

A cornerstone of our examination preparation is the Raising Achievement Plan [RAP]. This structured six-week process helps students develop the habits, organisation, and routines that underpin successful revision. The RAP model is introduced early in a student’s journey at St Thomas More and is built upon year after year. By the time pupils reach Year 11 or Year 13, effective revision practice has become embedded and second nature, giving them confidence and control during external examinations.

How Families Can Help

Parental involvement plays a crucial role in supporting students to prepare for formal assessments and examinations. You can help by:

  • Encouraging and praising your child’s effort and progress
  • Helping them strike a healthy balance between study and relaxation
  • Displaying a revision timetable at home to maintain structure and awareness
  • Ensuring excellent attendance in the lead-up to exams
  • Checking that your child is fully prepared and equipped on each exam day

We also host information evenings for parents and carers, offering practical advice on how to support your child with revision and exam preparation. These events are listed in our school calendar, with additional details shared nearer the time. Below are some useful links and resources to help you support your child with revision in the run-up to formal examinations.
