How Your Child Will be Assesssed

Whole School Approach

At St Thomas More, we believe that assessment is not an add-on, but an integral part of the learning process. It supports teaching, guides curriculum planning, and helps every student to understand their progress and next steps.

In every subject, students take part in regular low-stakes assessments within lessons. These activities give teachers valuable insight into each student’s understanding, allowing them to address misconceptions quickly and plan future learning effectively. Students also have opportunities to demonstrate their learning in a range of ways, ensuring that assessment reflects the breadth of their knowledge and skills.

In addition to ongoing in class assessment, students complete a formal assessment midway through the year and a more comprehensive end-of-year examination. This structure helps students to develop strong study habits, consolidate knowledge, and build the resilience and confidence needed for success in external examinations.

As many public examinations at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 are linear, our assessment approach is designed to help students “remember more for longer”. Each assessment builds on prior learning, encouraging cumulative recall and deeper understanding over time.

Dates for formal assessments are shared in advance with students and families, and are also published in the school calendar. We greatly value the support of families in helping students prepare effectively, and encourage the use of knowledge organisers and revision timetables as key tools for home study.

Preparing for Assessments and Examinations

In the lead-up to major assessment periods, students follow a structured six-week “Raising Achievement Plan” [RAP], beginning in Year 7 and continuing through to Year 13.

This programme is designed to develop effective revision strategies, organisation, and self-reflection, helping students to take ownership of their learning. During this period, students benefit from:

  • Focused assemblies that guide and motivate them
  • Bespoke revision packs and study materials
  • Support with time management and revision planning
  • Regular check-ins with tutors and subject teachers
  • Opportunities to celebrate progress and success

As students progress into Key Stage 4 and beyond, the Raising Achievement Plan becomes increasingly tailored, offering additional support such as:

  • Targeted subject-specific revision sessions
  • Masterclasses and walking-talking mocks
  • Bespoke one-to-one support from Progress Leaders
  • Enhanced opportunities for family engagement and guidance
