Personal Development Opportunities
Being part of the St Thomas More Sixth Form community is about so much more than studying the subjects of your choice — it’s about the experience, the friendships, and the wide range of opportunities available to help you grow personally and socially.
We believe that Sixth Form should be a time when students develop their independence, confidence and leadership skills. With this in mind, all students in our Sixth Form are encouraged to take part in a range of enrichment and personal development opportunities, including:
Sixth Form Retreats
Our annual two-day visit to Ford Castle is a highlight of the Sixth Form calendar. Students take part in a range of outdoor activities, teamwork challenges and reflection sessions, while enjoying the chance to relax and socialise with their peers in a unique setting.
Work Experience Week [Year 12]
All Year 12 students take part in a dedicated Work Experience Week, giving them the chance to explore future career interests, develop essential employability skills, and gain first-hand experience of the workplace. Our pastoral and careers teams work closely with students to ensure they are well prepared and supported before, during, and after their placements.
Horizons Programme
Our Horizons Programme is a structured element of our Core Curriculum designed to broaden students’ experiences and prepare them for life beyond school. It includes opportunities to explore the local area, take part in group challenges, engage in community work, and access high-quality guidance and support for future pathways — whether university, apprenticeships or employment.
Student Leadership
We want our students to develop all of the life skills that they need to be successful as they progress on to their chosen career. In order to achieve this, we expect students to participate with at least one student leadership opportunity. These opportunities include:
- Leading an extracurricular club/society
- Literacy Leaders
- Wellbeing Champions
- Pope John Paul II Award
- Ethos Team
- Student Mentoring
- Student Librarian
- Personal Development ‘Pop Up’ Leaders
- Volunteering
- Becoming a Prefect
- Becoming the Head Girl/Boy
Annual Whole School Events
Our Sixth Form students play an active role in our wider school community. They take part in a range of whole-school events such as our annual charity walk, Christmas quizzes, and cinema trips, helping to foster a strong sense of belonging and shared celebration across the school.Fitness Suite Membership
All Sixth Form students receive free membership to our on-site Fitness Suite, allowing them to prioritise their wellbeing and make use of our facilities at times that fit around their studies.
