Safeguarding

Safeguarding

Keeping children and young people safe is at the heart of everything we do at St Thomas More. Our safeguarding team works to create a culture of safety and vigilance across the school and within our wider community.

Each half term, families receive a letter from our Designated Safeguarding Lead [DSL] offering advice and guidance on current safeguarding topics.

Our approach to safeguarding is whole-school and proactive, encompassing:

  • A comprehensive wellbeing programme to support students’ safety and mental health
  • Clear reporting systems for any incidents, ensuring swift and effective responses
  • Our #NeverOk campaign, which empowers staff and students to recognise and report all forms of discrimination, bullying, and unsafe behaviour
  • Working with outside agencies  in order to best support the young people in our community

We encourage pupils and families to report any incident they see, hear, or experience, confident that it will be addressed promptly and appropriately.

How to Report a Concern

Students are encouraged to talk openly about any concerns with their pastoral tutor, Head of House, or any other member of staff they feel comfortable with.

They can also use the dedicated email: neverok@stm.bwcet.co.uk, which is regularly monitored by our pastoral team.

Families are encouraged to report concerns via their House email system or by calling the school on 0191 499 0111.

Our Safeguarding Team

All members of the Senior Leadership Team and Pastoral Team are fully DSL trained, ensuring the school has maximum capacity to support pupils and families effectively. While the staff listed below are key contacts for safeguarding, any senior or pastoral leader can be approached with concerns.

  • Mr D. Shield [Deputy Head Teacher / DSL]
  • Ms J. Harle [Assistant Head Teacher / DDSL]
  • Mr R. Lennox [Assistant Head Teacher / DDSL]
  • Mrs K. Large [Education Welfare Officer / DDSL]
